Most asked

What will Spookle never stop?

Apple and system processes (anything in /System, /usr/libexec, /usr/sbin, /sbin, /bin and /usr/bin, plus launchd, WindowServer, Finder, Dock and friends), other users' processes and Spookle itself. By default it also protects Docker Desktop, OrbStack, local databases (Postgres, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB), live AI agent sessions and anything running in a terminal window. When you quit a whole agent session yourself, only your login shell stays protected, so the session's own leftovers can go. You can add your own rules by command, path, port or project folder.

Can I undo a Big files cleanup?

Yes. Undo puts back the last batch you sent to the Trash. Earlier batches are still in the Trash, so you can restore them from Finder.

Which AI agents and tools does it recognise?

Spookle has built in signatures for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and VS Code, plus common leftovers such as MCP servers (including Playwright and Chrome DevTools MCP), headless Chrome, test watchers and tsserver. Anything it cannot attribute is still shown, labelled Unknown agent.

The basics

04
What is Spookle?

A menu bar app for Mac that does two jobs. It is a system monitor for CPU, memory, disk, network, GPU, Neural Engine, battery, sensors, sound and Bluetooth. It also finds the dev servers, MCP servers and other processes every AI agent leaves running, and clears them after you confirm.

Which Macs does it run on?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. The app is notarised by Apple.

How is it different from Activity Monitor or Vitals?

Activity Monitor lists processes by PID. Spookle groups them by project and agent, tells you which ones outlived their session and what stopping them frees, then stops the whole process tree in one confirm. It also covers big files and agent leftovers on disk. See the compare page for the full side by side.

Safety

04
Is it safe to stop processes with Spookle?

Every stop asks first and is logged. Spookle only acts on processes owned by you, and stops the whole tree so nothing is left half running. Anything attached to a terminal window is protected, so a command you are running by hand is never stopped from a ghost cleanup.

Does it delete files?

Never outright. Big files, build leftovers, agent history and uninstalled apps go to the Trash after you review the list.

Monitors

04
Can Spookle control my fans?

No. Fan speeds and sensors are read only. Spookle shows them, it does not change them. There is no temperature alert either.

What does the Sound tab do?

It lists your audio devices with the default one marked, each device's volume and mute state, and which apps are playing or recording right now. It is read only and does not change any of them.

How accurate is the Neural Engine reading?

It is an estimate. macOS has no public Neural Engine usage figure, so Spookle reads its power draw in watts from the macOS energy counters and shows activity from that, next to its recent peak. Treat it as a trend, not a true usage percentage.

Which AI plans can it show usage for?

Claude only, for now. Plan usage stays off until you paste a Claude token yourself. Spookle never reads sign ins from other apps.

Free and Pro

02
What is free and what is in Pro?

Free covers every monitor, ghost cleanup one confirm at a time and 24 hours of history. Pro adds a year of history, alerts, auto cleanup and bulk actions. The download page has the details.

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to sign up for to use Spookle.

Privacy

02
Does any of my data leave my Mac?

No personal data does. The app has no analytics and no telemetry, and your readings and history stay on your Mac. Spookle only talks to its update feed, the licence server, your own localhost ports and Docker, plus Claude if you turn on plan usage with your own token.

Does the website track me?

No cookies and no tracking scripts. We count downloads. Nothing personal is stored.

Updates, languages and removal

04
How does Spookle update?

Through Sparkle, the standard Mac updater. Soon after you first open Spookle it asks once whether to check for updates automatically. When an update is found it shows the release notes and you choose when to install. You can check any time in Settings, About, Check for updates. Updates are signed, and the app checks the signature before installing.

Which languages does it support?

English plus 10 more languages. The translations are partly done and partly machine translated, so some text may still show in English or read a little rough. Corrections are welcome at support@spookle.app.

How do I uninstall Spookle?

Quit Spookle from its menu, then drag Spookle from Applications to the Trash. To remove everything, also delete the Spookle folder in ~/Library/Application Support (history, cleanup and stop logs), the file app.spookle.Spookle.plist in ~/Library/Preferences, and any Spookle items in Keychain Access (your Claude token and licence, if you added them). If you turned on Launch at login, turn it off first.

Can I use it from Terminal or from my agent?

Yes. The spookle command prints JSON, and the MCP server lets an agent ask what is running. Any stop still waits for your confirm in the app.
